Education Is a Basic Human Right For Every Child
Uganda has a big number of children and youth out of school. The most affected are children living in vulnerable situations such as poverty-stricken homes, children living with elderly caregivers, those with chronic illnesses, those in conflict with the law, others are teenage girls, child mothers and fathers as well as those children and youth living with disabilities. These children usually find it difficult to access and complete their education. The enactment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) reaffirms a global commitment to ensuring that all boys and girls have access to, and complete, free, equitable, and quality Primary education by 2030.
Over-age learners who enroll in formal education systems are found to be much more likely to drop out early because of; poor instructional strategies and methodologies, and self- denial. Whereas children who do not start school at the correct age would likely remain out of school, and those who enter when they are already over aged face multiple challenges including sharing classrooms and studying with much younger children.
Women in Action adapted the accelerated education program model to provide an opportunity for those over-age out-of-school children to access education, catch up and transition back into the formal system, secondary education, vocational training and livelihoods.
Our Accelerated Education program targets children of ages 10-18 years. Children who dropped out and those who have never got chance to join school. Seven years curriculum is condensed in three years i.e. Level 1(P1, P.2 and P3) Level2 (P4 & P5), Level3 (P6 & P7).
